Publishing Administration

Most songwriters in Canada are aware of radio royalties collected by SOCAN.  Some also know about mechanical royalties collected by CMRRA and SODRAC. Some may even know about other income streams. What is not so well known is that information about when and where your compositions are performed needs to be regulary updated with the rights society of your choice, in order to maximize the income those agencies may collect. That in itself is a part time job!

This excercise is commonly known as administration.

Some choose to hire a big publisher to administrate their publishing. Big publishers require writers to give up all right and control over seeing the sources of income being generated by the copyrights. The writer becomes totally reliant upon the publisher to advise if and when any money has been collected or if any is owed to the writer.

Under this regime the writer can never actually verify that what the publisher is reporting as income is correct unless the writer engages in a cumbersome and expensive audit of his publisher.  At best, this is not a transparent system.

Publishing administration has also traditionally meant accepting semi-annual or quarterly reporting and then being paid 90 days after that. In some cases that could mean waiting up to nine months to receive a cheque when the administrator has been holding the writer's money and collecting interest on it for themselves.

EBA is different. It is the only company in the world which provides virtually immediate payout and fully transparent collection.

At EBA you are in total control. Cheques to our writer clients come to our address so that we can ensure that our clients are being paid properly. However, the cheques arrive in the writer's name. There is therefore no question that writer is getting the full amount owed. As well, writer clients are advised as soon as the cheque arrives so that clients can be paid almost immediately. Instead of waiting up to nine months, writers may get paid as early as the same day cheques arrive in our office!
